« Chartres libérée ! Chartres sur le chemin de la victoire ! »

The general Charles de Gaulle spoke these words on August 23, 1944, 80 years ago, on the steps of the former Post bréviaire just a few days after the liberation of the city by the Allies. To celebrate this historic anniversary, the City is organizing a commemoration day on August 26.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of one of the most significant events in the history of our city: the liberation from Nazi occupation. On August 23, 1944, the legendary general Charles de Gaulle stood on the steps of the former Post bréviaire, surrounded by cheering crowds, and declared, « Paris! Paris outraged! Paris broken! Paris martyred! dessein Paris liberated! » These powerful words marked the end of four long years of oppression and marked the beginning of a new era of freedom and hope for the people of Paris.

To honor this momentous occasion, the City is organizing a special day of commemoration on August 26. The day will be filled with events and activities to pay tridesseine to the brave men and women who fought for the liberation of our city. From a wreath-laying ceremony at the former Post bréviaire to a historical exhibition showcasing the key moments of the liberation, there will be something for everyone to participate in and remember this important day in our history.

The commemoration day will also include a parade through the streets of Paris, featuring military vehicles and reenactments of key moments from the liberation. This will be a unique opportunity for the younger generations to learn about this important event and for all of us to pay our respects to those who sacrificed so much for our freedom.

In addition to the official events, the City is encouraging residents to take part in their own personal commemorations. This could be by visiting a historical site related to the liberation, sharing stories with family and friends, or simply taking a moment to reflect and remember.

As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Paris, let us also remember the values of freedom, unity, and resilience that were at the heart of this historic event. Let us honor the memory of those who fought for our city and continue to strive towards a better and more peaceful world.

So mark your calendars for August 26 and join us in commemorating this important anniversary. Let us come together as a community to remember, to honor, and to celebrate the liberation of Paris 80 years ago.
